Top 10 Pembroke Welsh Corgi Rescues to Find Corgis for Adoption

I’ve already established connections with different reputable and dedicated rescues across the country through years of experience, so the rescues on this list were chosen through a set of criteria.

Their years of service, facilities, mission, and rescue standards will be discussed to give you a clear picture of how they function exactly.

1. Sunshine Corgi Rescue (SCR) – Florida

Sunshine Corgi Rescue is a non-profit organization whose mission is to save Pembroke Welsh Corgis from inhumane and unethical treatment. They are dedicated to rehoming abandoned and surrendered Corgis across the state of Florida.

The organization is affiliated with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America (PWCCA) – the parent organization of Corgi clubs in America. They shelter purebred Welsh Corgis and mixes that are deemed to have enough Welsh characteristics.

All of the dogs rescued by SCR are given the necessary medical attention including deworming, neutering, and spaying.

Core vaccines are also administered to protect them against common canine diseases and they also microchip the dog before clearing it for adoption.

Most of the dogs they rescue are around two to six years old. The price for their adoption varies depending on the age of the dog and the medical cost specific to it. The average adoption cost is $250 but this can spike up to $750 for younger ones.

The Corgis in SCR are sheltered in foster homes where they receive their daily necessities. While in foster homes, the dogs are monitored in regards to their behavior. Only those who have shown excellent temperament are cleared for adoption.

Neutering and spaying are also done by professional veterinarians. Their behavior and temperament are regularly monitored before being cleared for adoption.

Rescued Corgis stay in loving foster homes before they are adopted. During fostering, they are trained and socialized to improve their demeanor.

You might wait for some time if you would like to adopt one from this Corgi rescue. The organization suggests that you fill out the application form earlier and wait until a Corgi arrives at the rescue.

The adoption fee on SRC ranges from $200 to $500 depending on the age and medical costs provided to the specific dog before placement. Nonetheless, it is just a small fraction of the total expense and effort they provide in taking care of the dogs.

3. Columbia River Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club (CRPWCC) – Oregon

CRPWCC has been around since 1987. Aside from its dedication to promoting standard and ethical breeding of Corgis, the club is also committed to rescuing and rehoming unwanted, abandoned, and surrendered dogs– specifically purebred Corgis.

All of the Corgis that enter their home of CRPWCC are administered with the necessary health examinations. Core vaccines are given to protect the Corgis from common canine health problems. The dogs also undergo dental examination, spaying, and neutering.

Aside from all the things I’ve mentioned, the club is also responsible for educating its members and the community on responsible pet ownership.

The physical location of the club is in Kentucky but it serves the region of Ohio. The club promotes responsible and standard breeding and dedicates its effort to rescuing and rehoming homeless Corgis.

They also conduct some necessary dog procedures so if you will adopt from OVPWCC, expect that the dog is already neutered or spayed.

In adopting a Corgi from OVPWCC, you will need to file an application that includes a questionnaire containing questions about the applicant’s preference, lifestyle, and living conditions.

The information ought to be used in finding the Corgi that is a perfect match for the applicant.

The adoption price in OVPWCC is $300– though you can add more if you want to “donate.” The price reflects the expenses they accumulated in taking care of the dog while in their custody.

The Corgis in PWCCP live in foster homes owned by volunteers who are knowledgeable about the breed. Their temperament, personality, and behavior are monitored which would help find their next family.

Vaccine shots are given to protect them against common dog illnesses. Deworming, tick and flea medication, and heartworm treatment are also administered to ensure the dog’s health.

You won’t also need to worry about neutering or spaying the dog as the organization takes care of it already.

Usually, the Corgis rescued in PWCCP are five years old and above. It is very rare for them to rescue a puppy Corgi.

The club is responsible for rehoming Corgis around Washington, so they closely work with Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue (SPDR).

Most of the Corgis they rescue are surrendered because their owners died, the family had a crisis, or the owner is moving to another place.

The age of Corgis they rescue typically ranges from four to nine years old so medical attention is immediately given to them to ensure their health and vigor.

Standard requirements such as fenced yard, living condition, number of household members, and lifestyle are asked in their application form. The contact information of the applicant’s landlord and veterinarian are also required for referencing.

The adoption agreement of CPWCC clearly states the responsibilities of the new owner which includes (but are not limited to):

Meanwhile, the temperament and behavior of the dogs are also observed and monitored. Corgis who have shown aggression and a negative demeanor are not cleared for adoption.

They also encourage people to enter their foster training programs to increase the number of foster homes that can shelter Corgis. Since the organization is an all-volunteer staff, they can only rescue Corgis as many as the foster homes they have.

  • Petfinder – This is an online database for different dog breeds and pets. On average, there are more than 250 homeless Corgis posted on this site. Just search for the breed name and you’ll see the nearest Corgi in need of a new home. They also offer pet transport for those who would like to adopt but are too far from the shelters and rescues.
  • Adopt-a-Pet – This online organization is affiliated with different rescues and humane societies across the US territories. You can easily find a Corgi ready to be adopted through this site. This database screens the breeders that advertise on their website.
  • Petango – Petango is a multiscale online site where you can search for pets that can be adopted across the US. With 1,800 animal welfare organization partners, you can easily find Corgis available for adoption near you.

Why Do People Put Corgis up for Adoption or in a Rescue?

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), around 6.5 million companion dogs are rescued nationwide each year. The number includes all sorts of breeds including Corgis.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis, either purebred or not, end up in rescues or shelters for various reasons. Some of them are the following:

  • The owner is moving to another area where the Corgi is not allowed. Most of the time, when the family moves to another location, they have to give up their pets because of restrictions.
  • The owner died and no one from the family is capable of taking care of the dog.
  • There are already too many pets at home.
  • The owner has decided that the Corgi is “too much to handle.” This leads me to point out that you should research first about the breed before buying one.
  • The dog showed aggression and has bitten people. Some owners become afraid of their own dogs when they’ve seen them become aggressive.
  • A family member has an allergy.
  • The family can’t provide for the needs (financially) of the dog any longer.

How Much Should It Cost to Adopt a Corgi?

Compared to buying from breeders, I can say that adopting is more economical and wise. If you buy a pup, you might need to cash out $1,000 to $2,000. While if you opt to adopt a Corgi from a rescue, you will only need to spend $200 to $800 for the adoption fee.

You might ask that if you are just adopting, why need to pay? The thing is, most of the rescues and shelters are all volunteer-run and they only operate through donations.

The fees that you give when you adopt are allotted to the expenses accumulated in taking care of the rescued dogs. To give you a clearer picture of where your payment goes, I decided to deconstruct the cost in this section.

Here are the expenses that are factored in on computing the adoption fees:

ExpensesAverage Cost
Vet Checkups$65 – $170
Rabies Vaccination$15 – $25
Distemper Vaccination$60
Spaying/Neutering$150 – $400
Heartworm Test$15 – $35
Flea/Tick Treatment$50 – $200
Deworming$20 – $50
Microchip$50
Collar and ID Tag$5 – $10
Total$430 – $1,000

As you probably notice, the amount required by various rescues does not really cover the exact amount they spent in rehabilitating your dog.

This is beneficial to you since you won’t have to pay for such an expensive adoption fee and you get to bring home a well-rounded and healthy dog.

Is It Difficult to Adopt a Corgi From a Rescue?

A man feeding a Corgi rescue

The answer to whether it is difficult to adopt a Corgi depends on the availability of the breed in the facility, the adoption process of the rescue, and your readiness to adopt.

Compared to other breeds, the number of Corgis ending up on rescues is not quite much (but still, no dogs should be abandoned!). You might need to wait a little longer if no Corgi is available for adoption.

Some rescues could be very strict when it comes to their adoption process. Some rescues conduct several house visits to make sure that the applicant’s home is not hazardous for the dog.

Multiple reference calls and interviews with the applicant’s landlord and a veterinarian should also be expected.

The reason behind these laborious processes is they don’t want the Corgi to be adopted only to end up being surrendered again because of mismatching. Rescued Corgis should only be adopted by those who are capable of taking them in for their lifetime.

Your readiness would also affect the adoption process. If you are not ready financially and emotionally, then the adoption process will be difficult for you.

Taking in a Corgi is a lifetime responsibility and commitment. You should prepare and educate yourself first before applying for adoption.

3 Tips for Getting Approved by a Rescue to Adopt a Corgi

As part of preparing yourself, try to follow these simple tips to have your adoption application approved:

  • Know and follow the guidelines of the rescue. Before applying for adoption, research the requirements of the rescue where you will apply. Make sure to adhere to their guidelines and requirements.
  • Be an expert on Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Rescues trust applicants that are knowledgeable about the breed. You should pack up some facts about the breed before going on an interview.
  • Regularly ask for updates and visit the facility. Asking for regular updates will only show your desire and commitment to adopting. Helping the rescue with their activities will also show your pure intentions.

Final Thoughts

It is so unfortunate and saddening that no matter how loving Corgis are, some still end up homeless. What’s worse is that some undergo euthanasia due to the increasing number of Corgis in the shelter.

This is the very reason why I encourage people to rescue dogs instead of buying from breeders. You will not only save a couple of bucks but you will also save a soul.

In adopting, you might wait for a long time but be patient. Once you have your Corgi with you, you’ll see that everything is worth it.

There is a Corgi (fluffy or mix?) that needs a loving home. The owner is 80, with one leg and living in his car. He recently went to a dive motel that won’t take pets. He is willing to let her be adopted — she deserves a good home! He said she grew up with cats and gets along with them. She has her shots, but is not spayed.
I can’t keep her, as much as I want to, but I can’t afford any more animals — fixed income and a health issue. I’m on 5 acres in the desert that I’ve owned for 30 years, have 5 horses, 6 dogs and 4 cats buried on my property.
I’m hoping to be able to take her to some rescue group (not Humane Society or Animal Control) directly from her current situation. My property and circumstances are not conducive to low-to-the-ground breeds. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or directions! Thanks!
