Saturday 29th of October 2022

In my experience, a potential means to find a fine Anatolian Shepherd Dog is by joining the National Club, Anatolian Shepherd Dog Club of America. Many members may be engaged in breeding. Remember, large breed dogs, females, may come into season just once in nearly two years. The litters can be as large as 13; more usual are litters of 11. Small breed dogs are more frequent though litters much smaller. My present ASD is a rescue, now 6.5 + years old. I adopted him at about 9.5 months. Knowing the breed put me in favorable position with the very knowledgeable rescue facility. We worked via my long time veterinarian. However. a successful training was not to be had. Though resident in a large metro, finding a viable training facility proved a failure. My previous 3 ASDs trained at a fine facility, but it had moved 25 miles further south, about 55 miles each way. Try to carry a bright, inquisitive teenage pup through high density traffic on an Interstate! It fell to me to pickup where training left off or omitted. It proved successful. The best timing for training is the window etween 10 and 20 weeks. And. A knowledgeable Vet can assist in finding potential trainers. The unique abilities and intelligence of Anatolian Shepherds cannot be overstated. They are clever and are one up on every move through training. So PRACTICE with your ASD and practice more. And practice will be necessary through most of the canines life. My last two lived to within weeks of their 16th birthdays. Long lives is to be expected and hoped for! Yes, best to have a fenced yard and a locked gate. Fence should be 6 feet, minimum height. My present circumstance is an apartment. We walk on lawns and have fortunate access to a public school track and grounds. Our excitement and challenges have been irresponsible joggers with medium and large dogs and coyotes. The ASD is powerful..Normal dogs, all canines, have 3 times the power per pound of a strong, think Arnold Shwartzneger, human male. The power of the ASD in a burst of energy, "bolt," is 6 or more times the strength of a very strong man. Introduce the pup to as many unique situations and children as possible. Always be polite to the folks encountered. The Anatolian pup grows to be watchful and quiet and reserved. The dog or batch loves to observe. The look for a location where a 270 degree vision field is perfect to view their realm. Better, a rise that reveals a near 360 degree Vision field. The observation is from their genes; thousands of years back to, perhaps, 5000 B.C.E.! There is so much more! And the owner is much more, a comrad, or more of this splendid dog. Best wishes and best of luck. Better, training and partnership!
